In Irem’s arcade game Moon Patrol, the player drives a moon buggy.
Moon Patrol was released in 1982 and places the player on the surface of the Moon. The side-scrolling game requires the vehicle to travel across uneven terrain while avoiding craters, rocks, mines, and enemy attacks.
The moon buggy can jump over hazards and fire at obstacles or enemies. The game is widely remembered for combining horizontal scrolling with layered background movement, creating an early parallax-scrolling effect that made the lunar landscape appear to move at different depths.
The vehicle is often casually called a lunar rover because of the setting, but “moon buggy” is the established name used in descriptions of the game. It is a fictional arcade vehicle rather than a simulation of a specific NASA rover.
