In "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," Cate Blanchett plays the Soviet agent Irina Spalko. Spalko is the film's principal antagonist and leads Soviet forces searching for a mysterious crystal skull in Peru.
Set in 1957 during the Cold War, the film places Indiana Jones in conflict with Soviet agents rather than the Nazi forces of the earlier adventures. Spalko serves as a highly skilled operative and scientist whose interest in supernatural knowledge drives the expedition to Akator. She is determined to use the crystal skull's powers for the benefit of the Soviet Union.
Blanchett had wanted to play a villain and helped shape Spalko's distinctive appearance, including her severe bob haircut. She also trained in fencing for the role. Spalko is sometimes confused with other Indiana Jones antagonists such as René Belloq or Mola Ram, but Belloq is the French archaeologist in "Raiders," while Mola Ram is the Thuggee priest in "Temple of Doom."
