In Howl's Moving Castle, what is the name of the witch who curses Sophie?

In Howl's Moving Castle, the witch who curses Sophie is the Witch of the Waste.

Sophie encounters the Witch of the Waste after visiting her sister Lettie. The witch transforms Sophie into a 90-year-old woman, forcing her to leave home and search for a way to break the spell. Sophie eventually reaches Howl's moving castle and becomes its self-appointed cleaning woman.

The Witch of the Waste is distinct from Madame Suliman, the powerful royal sorceress, and from Calcifer, the fire demon who powers the castle. Turnip Head is also unrelated to Sophie's curse: he is the enchanted scarecrow who helps guide her to the castle.

The film's version differs in important ways from Diana Wynne Jones's novel, but the Witch of the Waste curses Sophie in both stories. In the film, Sophie's growing confidence and compassion are closely tied to her eventual recovery from the spell.
