In House M.D., what instrument does Dr. House regularly use while walking?

The story behind the answer

Dr. House regularly uses a cane while walking in House M.D.

House’s cane is a visible consequence of the chronic leg pain caused by an infarction in his quadriceps muscle. The injury left him with lasting damage and contributes to his distinctive limp. The cane is therefore both a medical aid and a recurring visual symbol of the character’s pain and physical limitations.

Hugh Laurie incorporated the limp into his performance, helping establish House’s posture and movement from the beginning of the series. House often decorates or handles the cane in ways that reflect his irreverent personality, but the underlying reason for using it remains connected to his leg injury.

A cane is not the same as a crutch or walker. House’s mobility aid is specifically a single cane, and descriptions that call it a crutch change the concrete object shown on screen.
