House M.D. introduced its reality-show-style competition to replace House’s team in season four.
Season four begins after the original diagnostic fellows leave or move on from House’s team. House then interviews and tests a large group of medical candidates, treating the process like an elimination competition. The unusual structure allowed the series to introduce several new characters while making House’s management style part of the central plot.
The competition ultimately produces a smaller team that includes Chris Taub, Lawrence Kutner, and Remy “Thirteen” Hadley. Foreman later returns and becomes involved with the new group. The season also includes the two-part finale “House’s Head” and “Wilson’s Heart,” which connect the team changes to a major mystery involving House’s memory.
Viewers sometimes associate the competition with later team changes, but it occurs specifically in season four. Season five follows the established new team rather than introducing the original replacement competition.
