In Hindu mythology, who is traditionally described as Hanuman’s divine father?

The story behind the answer

In Hindu mythology, Vayu is traditionally described as Hanuman’s divine father.

Vayu is the god of wind, and Hanuman is therefore often called Vayuputra, meaning “son of Vayu,” or Pavanasuta, meaning “son of the wind.” Hanuman’s mother is usually identified as Anjana, a woman who had previously been an apsara named Punjikasthala.

Different versions of Hanuman’s birth story connect his conception to divine intervention involving Vayu and a sacred offering received by Anjana. In many traditions, Vayu’s role explains Hanuman’s extraordinary speed, strength, and ability to leap through the air.

Hanuman is also described as a vanara and a devoted servant of Rama in the Ramayana. Surya, the sun god, is important in another episode because Hanuman becomes his student, but Surya is not normally identified as Hanuman’s divine father.
