In Hindu mythology, Lakshmi is traditionally associated with prosperity and fortune.
Lakshmi is a major Hindu goddess connected with wealth, good fortune, beauty, abundance, and auspiciousness. She is commonly depicted seated or standing on a lotus, sometimes accompanied by elephants. Vishnu is traditionally regarded as her husband, and she is often shown beside him or associated with his avatars.
In the Samudra Manthana story, Lakshmi emerges from the churning of the cosmic ocean and chooses Vishnu. This episode is one traditional explanation for her association with renewal and prosperity.
Lakshmi is not the same goddess as Saraswati, who is associated with learning, music, and the arts. Diwali celebrations commonly include Lakshmi Puja, a ritual seeking prosperity and blessings for the household.
