In Hindu mythology, Mahishasura is the buffalo demon defeated by the goddess Durga after a prolonged battle.
Mahishasura is described as a powerful asura who can change form, including taking the shape of a buffalo. His growing power threatens the gods, who unite their energies to create Durga. The goddess receives divine weapons and rides into battle against him.
The conflict is traditionally commemorated during Navaratri, a nine-night festival devoted in part to the goddess. The tenth day, Vijayadashami or Dussehra, celebrates the victory of good over Mahishasura in many regional traditions.
Mahishasura is sometimes confused with other demons defeated by the Goddess, such as Shumbha and Nishumbha. His distinctive identifying feature is the buffalo form, which appears in sculpture, painting, and festival iconography.
