In Genesis's Noah's Ark story, Noah's father's name was Lamech.
Genesis 5 presents Noah within a genealogy descending from Adam through Seth. It identifies Lamech as Noah's father and says Lamech named his son Noah, connecting the name with relief or comfort from the hardship of human labor.
Lamech is distinct from another Lamech in Genesis. Genesis 4 names a Lamech descended from Cain, while Genesis 5 describes Noah's father in the line of Seth. The repeated name can cause confusion when readers compare the two genealogies.
Noah's own sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—are named later in the narrative. Methuselah was Noah's grandfather, not his father, and Enoch was an earlier ancestor. Those neighboring names are why identifying Lamech precisely is useful.
