In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark story, how many people were aboard the Ark during the Flood?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark story, eight people were aboard the Ark during the Flood.

Genesis identifies Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their three wives as the Ark’s human occupants. Together, this makes a total of eight people. The number is also reflected in the New Testament, where First Peter refers to “eight souls” being saved through water.

This count does not include the animals, whose numbers are described separately. Genesis says Noah entered the Ark with his household before the waters came. The story therefore distinguishes between the eight human survivors and the animals preserved with them.

A common mix-up is to count only Noah and his three sons, producing four, but Genesis explicitly includes Noah’s wife and the wives of his sons. Their individual names are not supplied in the biblical account.
