In Genesis’s account of Noah’s Ark, how many people survived inside it?

The story behind the answer

Genesis’s account of Noah’s Ark says that eight people survived inside it.

The survivors were Noah, his wife, Noah’s three sons, and the three wives of those sons. Genesis names the sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth, but it does not give the names of any of the four women. The group is described as Noah’s immediate family, rather than a larger community of passengers.

This number is also repeated in the New Testament. First Peter refers to “eight souls” being saved through water, making eight a standard figure in Christian discussion of the Flood. Some later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions expand details about Noah’s family, but the Genesis narrative itself gives the total as eight.

The figure is easy to confuse with the number of animals, which Genesis discusses separately. The eight survivors are human passengers; they are not a count of animal pairs or species.
