Genesis's account of Noah's Ark says that eight people survived the Flood aboard it.
The survivors are Noah, his wife, their three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the wives of those three sons. Genesis 7:13 describes them entering the Ark before the waters rose, and 1 Peter 3:20 also refers to “eight persons” being saved through water.
This number counts Noah's immediate family, not the animals and not additional followers. The story presents the eight humans as the remnant preserved from a world portrayed as filled with violence and corruption.
The figure is sometimes confused with the number of people named in the story's genealogy or with the number of animals aboard. Those are separate counts. The Ark narrative does not name Noah's wife or the wives of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, although later traditions give them names.
