What were Noah's three sons called in the Book of Genesis?

The story behind the answer

The Book of Genesis names Noah's three sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis first introduces the three in its account of Noah's family before the Flood. After the Flood, their descendants are presented in the chapter commonly called the Table of Nations, which describes peoples and territories associated with each line. The genealogy is an ancient biblical framework for explaining the diversity of nations known to its authors.

The sons also appear in the story of Noah's drunkenness. Shem and Japheth cover their father without looking at him, while Ham is described as seeing Noah's nakedness. Later interpretations of that episode have generated extensive commentary, but the passage itself does not change the names or number of Noah's sons. They should not be confused with Noah's grandsons or with the patriarchs listed in later Genesis narratives.
