What phrase names the mountains where Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat,” not the name of one specific peak. Ararat was an ancient regional name associated with a kingdom and highlands in the area of eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus.

The modern mountain commonly called Mount Ararat is a prominent volcanic peak in eastern Turkey. It became strongly associated with the Ark in later tradition, but Genesis itself does not state that the vessel rested on that exact summit.

This distinction explains why translations and popular retellings vary between “the mountains of Ararat” and “Mount Ararat.” The biblical wording is the more precise answer to the location question.
