In Genesis, where do the Ark’s waters eventually recede enough for it to rest?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the Ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 says that the Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat after the Flood waters decreased. The wording refers to a mountainous region or range rather than naming one precisely identified peak. Ararat was associated with a kingdom or region in the ancient Near East, commonly linked with Urartu.

This distinction matters because later traditions often identify the site with Mount Ararat, the modern volcanic mountain in eastern Turkey. Genesis itself does not say that the Ark rested on that exact summit. Numerous expeditions and proposed discoveries have attracted attention over the centuries, but no archaeological evidence has been generally accepted as proving the Ark’s survival. The biblical wording therefore supports “the mountains of Ararat,” not a single universally established mountain.
