In Genesis, what length does God give for Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, God gives Noah’s Ark a length of 300 cubits.

Genesis 6:15 describes the vessel as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. The cubit was an ancient unit based approximately on the length of a forearm, so its exact modern equivalent is uncertain. Using common estimates, 300 cubits is roughly 135 metres, or about 450 feet.

The dimensions produce a long, boxlike vessel rather than the ship shape used by later artistic traditions. Genesis also specifies three decks, rooms, and a covering or roof. These details are why the ark is often discussed in both religious studies and the history of flood traditions.

Modern illustrations frequently make the ark look like a conventional boat. The biblical measurements, however, emphasize capacity and stability rather than speed or navigation.
