In Genesis, what is the name of Noah’s father?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s father is named Lamech. The genealogy in Genesis 5 places Lamech in the line descending from Seth, through Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah. Lamech says that his son Noah will bring relief from the difficult labor caused by the cursed ground.

This Lamech is different from another Lamech mentioned earlier in Genesis. The earlier figure belongs to Cain’s line and is associated with wives named Adah and Zillah. Sharing the same name can cause confusion, but the two men appear in separate genealogical lines and are not the same character.

Genesis says Lamech was 182 years old when Noah was born and lived for another 595 years. It gives Noah’s birth as part of the pre-flood genealogy rather than as a separate creation story.

Methuselah, often remembered as the Bible’s longest-lived person, was Noah’s grandfather, not his father. That relationship is a frequent mix-up in summaries of the family tree.
