In Genesis, what feature did Noah’s Ark have near its top?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark had a window near its top.

Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to make a tsohar for the Ark. English translations vary, rendering this term as a window, skylight, or opening. The feature is placed near the top of the vessel and is mentioned alongside the Ark’s door and its three decks.

The translation difference matters because the ancient Hebrew term is not universally interpreted in exactly the same way. Many English Bibles use “window,” making that the standard short answer for general trivia.

This opening is later connected with Noah’s attempts to learn whether the waters had receded. Genesis 8 describes Noah sending out birds from the Ark. The window should not be confused with the Ark’s door, which is separately named in the construction instructions.
