In Genesis, what did Noah send out first from the Ark to test the Flood waters?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah first sent out a raven from the Ark to test the Flood waters. Genesis 8:7 says he released the raven after the Ark came to rest and the waters began to decrease.

The raven’s behavior is described differently from the dove’s later tests. The text says the raven went back and forth until the waters dried up from the earth. Noah then sent a dove, which returned at first because it found no place to rest.

Because popular retellings focus on the dove and olive leaf, the raven is sometimes omitted or mistakenly named as the bird carrying the leaf. In the biblical sequence, the raven comes first, the dove follows, and the olive leaf belongs to the second dove mission. The order is a clear detail in Genesis 8.
