In Genesis, on which side is the door of Noah’s Ark made?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark has a door made in its side.

Genesis 6:16 lists the door with the Ark’s window and three decks. The wording identifies the door’s location, but it does not specify whether it was on the port or starboard side, nor does it give a detailed mechanism for opening and closing it. Genesis 7:16 later says that God shut Noah in after the people and animals entered.

Paintings and films commonly place the entrance at the front because that makes a large vessel easy to depict. That visual convention is not the same as the biblical description. The text gives no bow, stern, or compass direction for the door. “In its side” is consequently the most specific answer supported by the Genesis account, rather than a modern shipbuilding location.
