In Genesis, how wide was Noah’s Ark said to be?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark was said to be 50 cubits wide. Genesis 6:15 presents this measurement alongside the ark’s length of 300 cubits and height of 30 cubits. Together, these figures form the complete set of dimensions given in the biblical construction instructions.

Because the cubit was an ancient measurement rather than a universally fixed modern unit, the ark’s width cannot be converted with complete precision. Common estimates place 50 cubits at approximately 22 to 25 metres, or around 75 to 80 feet. Different traditions and archaeological conventions use somewhat different cubit lengths.

The ark is often pictured as a pointed wooden ship, but Genesis does not describe a conventional bow, stern, or sailing rig. Its proportions are closer to those of a broad floating vessel intended to remain stable. The text focuses on survival through the flood rather than navigation to a destination.
