In Genesis, how many people from Noah's family enter the Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, eight people from Noah’s family enter the Ark.

Genesis identifies the group as Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the wives of those three sons. Adding those people gives a total of eight. The family members are not all named individually in the Flood account, although the sons are named elsewhere as Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

This number is separate from the animals preserved aboard the Ark. Genesis discusses the animals in different passages and gives different counting formulations, which is why the human total should not be inferred from animal numbers or from later artistic depictions.

The New Testament also refers to “eight souls” being saved through water in 1 Peter 3:20. That later reference confirms the traditional Christian reading of the Genesis family count, while the original Genesis passage itself supplies the family relationships needed to calculate it.
