In Genesis, at what age was Noah when the floodwaters came?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters came. Genesis 7:6 gives this age immediately before describing the flood’s arrival and Noah’s entry into the ark.

The age fits the unusually long lifespans assigned to several early figures in Genesis. The same chapter says Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives entered the ark, along with the animals specified by the narrative. The number therefore identifies Noah’s age at the flood, not his age when construction began.

A common mix-up comes from nearby ages in the genealogy. Genesis says Noah was 500 years old when his sons were born, and Genesis 9:28–29 gives his total lifespan as 950 years. Those are separate chronological details. The flood itself is associated with his 600th year.

The age is a biblical narrative detail rather than a date that can be converted into a conventional historical calendar year. It is best quoted as the age stated in Genesis.
