In Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation,” the Foundation is established on the planet Terminus.
Terminus is a remote, mineral-poor world at the edge of the Galactic Empire. Hari Seldon’s psychohistory predicts that the Empire will fall, so the Encyclopedia Foundation is sent there under the official mission of preserving human knowledge. The settlers initially focus on compiling the Encyclopedia Galactica, but the planet’s isolation soon forces them to become a technologically powerful political force.
Terminus is not the same as Trantor, the densely populated imperial capital where Seldon’s crisis begins. Nor is it Aurora or Helicon, worlds associated with other parts of Asimov’s larger universe. In the early Foundation story, Terminus City is the planet’s principal settlement, and later conflicts with neighboring kingdoms make the apparently unimportant world strategically vital.
