In Enemy at the Gates, Soviet sniper Vasily Zaitsev defends Stalingrad.
The 2001 film is set during the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the decisive confrontations on the Eastern Front. Jude Law plays Zaitsev, who becomes a celebrated Soviet marksman while fighting German forces amid the ruined city and its industrial districts.
The real Vasily Zaitsev served in the Soviet Navy before becoming a sniper in the Red Army’s 62nd Army at Stalingrad. Soviet wartime accounts credited him with hundreds of kills, although exact figures and some famous episodes have been debated by historians.
The film’s central sniper duel with Major Erwin König is presented as historical, but evidence for König as a real individual is uncertain. The battle itself was unquestionably real and ended with the German Sixth Army’s surrender in February 1943.
