In Dragons' Den, which Japanese television programme inspired the original format?

The story behind the answer

Money Tigers inspired the original format of the British television programme Dragons' Den.

The Japanese programme, known as Money Tigers, established the core idea of entrepreneurs presenting business proposals to wealthy private investors. The British adaptation retained the competitive pitch, valuation, negotiation, and equity-offer structure while replacing the Japanese panel and setting with British Dragons.

The format was later adapted in many countries. The best-known American adaptation is Shark Tank, which uses different branding and terminology but follows the same broad premise of entrepreneurs seeking investment from experienced businesspeople.

Dragons' Den is therefore not simply a British invention, although its presentation and panel have become distinctive. The title reflects a common metaphor for powerful investors: “dragons” are formidable figures whose approval can provide capital, expertise, publicity, and commercial connections. The Japanese origin is often overlooked because the British and American versions became the most internationally visible editions.
