“For the First Time” is the new song Ariel sings in the human world in Disney’s 2023 live-action film The Little Mermaid.
The song was written for the remake by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. It appears after Ariel has become human and is discovering everyday life on land. Its lyrics explore her excitement, uncertainty, and sense of wonder as she encounters human experiences that were previously beyond her reach.
This song is distinct from “Part of Your World,” which belongs to the 1989 animated film and remains part of Ariel’s musical identity. The remake retains several classic songs while adding new material to expand the characters and story.
“For the First Time” is often confused with the new song “Wild Uncharted Waters,” which is associated with Prince Eric. The two songs serve different characters and viewpoints: Ariel sings about her first experiences on land, while Eric sings about his fascination with the mysterious girl who saved him.
