Awkwafina provides the voice of Scuttle in Disney’s 2023 film The Little Mermaid. Scuttle is a seabird who serves as one of Ariel’s above-water friends and offers enthusiastic, though often inaccurate, explanations of human objects.
The character is gender-swapped from the 1989 animated film, where Scuttle is voiced as male. Awkwafina’s performance gives the 2023 version a comic, fast-talking style. Scuttle also performs the new song “Scuttlebutt,” written for the live-action adaptation.
Awkwafina is the stage name of Nora Lum, an actor, comedian, and rapper. She is also known for films such as Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8. Melissa McCarthy plays Ursula, while Daveed Diggs voices Sebastian in the same 2023 film.
