In Disney’s 2020 live-action film Mulan, Mulan’s fellow recruit and ally is Chen Honghui.
Chen Honghui serves in the Imperial Army training unit with Mulan, who initially disguises herself as the male recruit Hua Jun. Their relationship develops through training and combat, and Chen becomes one of the soldiers most closely connected to her during the campaign.
The character occupies a role broadly comparable to Li Shang’s in the 1998 animated film, but Chen Honghui is not the same character. The live-action adaptation separates the commander role from the romantic and peer relationship, with Donnie Yen playing Commander Tung. Yoson An portrays Chen Honghui.
