Lea Salonga sings Mulan’s vocals in “Reflection” in Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan.
Salonga had already supplied the singing voice for Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, and she became the singing voice for Mulan as well. In Mulan, Ming-Na Wen speaks the character’s dialogue, creating a two-performer vocal arrangement for the heroine.
“Reflection” appears during a quiet sequence in which Mulan considers the gap between her public role and her private identity. The song was written by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel, who created much of the film’s musical material. Christina Aguilera also recorded a pop version associated with the film’s release.
The song is often misattributed to Wen because Wen is credited as Mulan’s voice actress. The distinction is important: Wen performs the spoken scenes, while Salonga performs Mulan’s singing in the animated film. Salonga’s clear musical style helped make “Reflection” one of Disney’s best-known late-1990s character songs.
