Shan Yu is the main Hun antagonist in Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan.
Shan Yu leads the Hun invasion of China and serves as the central military threat facing Mulan and the Imperial Army. He is designed as a formidable, largely unsympathetic villain whose presence gives the film a darker tone than many earlier Disney animated features.
The character is voiced by Miguel Ferrer. Shan Yu’s army crosses the Great Wall and attacks Chinese territory, prompting the Emperor to order a general mobilization. Mulan enters the conflict after disguising herself as a man and taking her father’s place.
Shan Yu is sometimes confused with Li Shang, who begins as Mulan’s military commander and becomes an ally, or with the Emperor, whose authority organizes the defense of China. The film does not identify Shan Yu as a historically verified individual; he is a fictional antagonist created for Disney’s adaptation of the Mulan legend.
