In Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan, Mulan sings “Reflection” while reflecting beside a pond.
The song appears after Mulan returns home from the failed matchmaker appointment. Looking at her reflection, she expresses the gap between the person she feels she is and the identity her family and society expect her to present.
“Reflection” became the film’s signature character song and was performed in the movie by Mulan’s singing voice, Lea Salonga. A separate pop version was recorded by Christina Aguilera and released as part of the film’s promotional music.
The song is sometimes confused with “True to Your Heart,” another prominent Mulan track. “True to Your Heart” is performed by 98 Degrees and Stevie Wonder and plays over the end credits, whereas “Reflection” belongs to Mulan’s personal story.
