Lea Salonga performs Mulan’s English version of “Reflection” in Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan.
The song appears during Mulan’s private moment of self-questioning after her unsuccessful visit to the matchmaker. Its lyrics focus on identity, family expectations, and the difference between a person’s public role and inner self.
Salonga performs the singing voice used for Mulan in the film, while Ming-Na Wen provides Mulan’s speaking voice. Christina Aguilera recorded a separate pop version of “Reflection,” which was released as a promotional single and helped introduce the song to radio audiences.
This distinction causes frequent confusion. Aguilera is strongly associated with the song because of her recording, but Salonga is the singer heard in the animated film’s character performance. “Reflection” was written by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel.
