In Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan, which emperor does Mulan help protect?

The story behind the answer

In Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan, Mulan helps protect the Emperor of China.

The Emperor is the ruler whose army is threatened by the Hun invasion. He orders one man from each family to join the Imperial Army, a decree that leads Mulan to disguise herself and enlist in her father’s place.

Near the climax, Mulan and her fellow soldiers defend the Emperor in the Imperial City. The film presents him as a calm and perceptive ruler who recognizes Mulan’s bravery after she exposes the Hun threat.

The character is not given a personal historical emperor’s name in the film. “The Emperor of China” is therefore the specific canonical designation used for the role. He should not be confused with the Jade Emperor, a figure from Chinese mythology.
