BD Wong voices the military commander Li Shang in Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan.
Li Shang is the son of a respected general and becomes the officer responsible for training Mulan and the other recruits. He initially judges soldiers by discipline and performance, but his view changes as Mulan demonstrates courage, intelligence, and leadership.
Wong provides Shang’s speaking voice. Donny Osmond performs Shang’s singing voice in the original film, including the musical number “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” This is another example of Mulan separating speaking and singing performers for major characters.
Li Shang is often confused with the film’s antagonist Shan Yu because both are military figures. They serve opposite purposes: Shang is a Chinese commander who becomes Mulan’s ally, while Shan Yu leads the Hun invasion. The name “Shang” refers to Li Shang, whereas “Shan Yu” is the villain’s full character name.
