In Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan, Mulan initially serves as a recruit while training with the imperial army.
Mulan enters the camp disguised as a man and uses the name Ping. Like the other new soldiers, she must complete basic training under Captain Li Shang. Her early performance is poor, and she struggles with physical drills, discipline, and the army’s expectations.
The training montage changes after Mulan finds a way to climb a tall pole while carrying heavy weights. She retrieves the arrow at the top and demonstrates the persistence that Shang wants from the recruits. Her progress helps transform the camp’s perception of her.
Mulan does not begin the film as an officer. Captain is Shang’s rank, while General Li commands the larger military force. Mulan later earns respect through her actions, but her initial military status is that of a recruit.
