Mushu is Mulan’s dragon companion in Disney’s 1998 animated film Mulan.
Mushu is a small, fast-talking red dragon voiced by Eddie Murphy. He begins the story as a disgraced family guardian and tries to restore his status by helping Mulan after she takes her father’s place in the army. His comic personality contrasts with the film’s more serious themes of duty, identity, and family honor.
The character is connected to Mulan’s ancestors and the Fa family’s guardian tradition, but he is not presented as a literal retelling of the ancient Ballad of Mulan. The film uses him as an original comic character within its fantasy version of the legend.
Viewers sometimes confuse Mushu with Cri-Kee, the lucky cricket who accompanies Mulan, or Khan, Mulan’s horse. Those characters travel with her, but neither is a dragon. Mushu’s name is also sometimes written incorrectly as “Mushu the Dragon”; the canonical character name is simply Mushu.
