In Disney's 1991 film Beauty and the Beast, what is the name of the castle's candelabra?

The story behind the answer

In Disney's 1991 film Beauty and the Beast, the castle's enchanted candelabra is named Lumière.

Lumière is one of the Beast's transformed servants. His name comes from the French word for “light,” fitting his form as a candleholder and his theatrical, welcoming personality. He encourages Belle to accept the castle's hospitality, even while the Beast struggles with his temper.

The other prominent enchanted servants include Cogsworth, a clock; Mrs. Potts, a teapot; and Chip, her son, represented as a teacup. Their transformations are consequences of the curse placed on the castle's household after the prince rejected an enchantress.

Lumière is especially associated with the musical number “Be Our Guest.” His expressive movements and French-inspired characterization made him one of the film's most memorable supporting characters. In the original English version, he is voiced by Jerry Orbach.
