In Disney's 1991 animated Beauty and the Beast, Belle and the Beast dance to “Beauty and the Beast.”
The song plays during the film’s celebrated ballroom sequence, after Belle begins to see the Beast differently. Mrs. Potts sings it as Belle and the Beast share dinner, enter the ballroom, and dance beneath the castle’s grand chandelier. The scene visually marks a turning point in their relationship.
Alan Menken composed the music and Howard Ashman wrote the lyrics. Angela Lansbury, who voiced Mrs. Potts, recorded the character performance. A shorter pop arrangement performed by Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion was used over the end credits and became a major hit.
The title song is distinct from “Something There,” which describes the characters’ changing feelings, and “Be Our Guest,” which is the servants’ elaborate dinner number. The ballroom performance is the film’s central romantic musical moment.
