In Disney's 1991 animated Beauty and the Beast, what is the name of the horse ridden by Belle?

The story behind the answer

Philippe is the name of Belle’s horse in Disney's 1991 animated Beauty and the Beast.

Philippe carries Belle and Maurice through the forest when they travel toward the castle. When Maurice becomes imprisoned, Philippe helps Belle reach the castle and later brings her back to the village after she sees her father through the enchanted mirror.

Philippe is a draft horse with a light-colored coat and a dark mane. Although he does not speak, his frightened reaction to the castle and his loyalty to Belle make him a recognizable supporting character. His name is often overlooked because the film focuses on the enchanted household objects.

Philippe should not be confused with Maximus, the horse from Disney’s 2010 animated film Tangled. Samson is Prince Philip’s horse in Sleeping Beauty, while Frou-Frou is a horse in The Aristocats.
