In Disney's 1989 film The Little Mermaid, what is Ariel's father's name?

The story behind the answer

In Disney's 1989 film The Little Mermaid, Ariel's father is King Triton.

Triton rules the underwater kingdom of Atlantica and is portrayed as a powerful merman with a trident. He initially opposes Ariel's fascination with the human world, especially her interest in Prince Eric, because he believes humans are dangerous and that Ariel should remain within the sea.

His conflict with Ariel drives much of the film's family drama. After Ariel makes a deal with Ursula and loses her voice, Triton eventually sacrifices his own freedom to save her. That act changes him into a captive of Ursula and helps set up the film's final confrontation.

King Triton is a Disney creation rather than a character from Hans Christian Andersen's original fairy tale. His name recalls the Greek sea god Triton, who is traditionally associated with the sea and is often depicted as a merman.
