In Disney's 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, which character sings “Kiss the Girl”?

The story behind the answer

In Disney's 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, Sebastian sings “Kiss the Girl.”

The song appears during a lagoon sequence arranged by Sebastian, the Jamaican-accented crab who serves King Triton. He encourages Prince Eric to kiss Ariel while the couple sits together in a small boat, but the moment is interrupted before Eric can act.

“Kiss the Girl” was written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman. It is one of the film’s best-known musical numbers, alongside “Part of Your World” and “Under the Sea.” Samuel E. Wright, who voiced Sebastian, performed the song in the original English-language film.

A common mix-up is confusing Sebastian’s performer with the character: Sebastian is the fictional singer, while Samuel E. Wright provided his voice. The song was also substantially re-created for the 2023 live-action adaptation, in which Daveed Diggs voiced Sebastian.
