In Disney’s 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, Paddi Edwards voiced Flotsam and Jetsam.
Flotsam and Jetsam are Ursula’s eel companions. They act as her spies, watching Ariel and reporting information back to their mistress. The pair are visually similar and usually appear together, making them a coordinated extension of Ursula’s influence rather than independent heroes or villains.
Paddi Edwards supplied the English voices for both eels in the original film. Giving one performer both roles helped preserve their paired, echoing quality. The characters communicate with Ursula and help lure Ariel toward the sea witch’s grotto.
Flotsam and Jetsam are sometimes mixed up with other supporting villains because their names are less prominent than Ursula’s. They are not moray eels in the same narrative role as ordinary animals; they are magical companions who serve Ursula. Their fate is tied directly to the climax of the film.
