In Despicable Me 3, Gru’s twin brother Dru is from the fictional country Freedonia.
Freedonia is presented as the homeland of Gru and Dru’s wealthy family. Dru lives there in a large estate and maintains the family’s connection to high-level villainy, while Gru has settled into domestic life with Lucy and the girls.
The country is fictional and belongs to the film’s exaggerated international setting. It should not be confused with real countries or with similarly named fictional locations from other films.
Dru’s introduction gives the story a new setting and explains why the brothers have different appearances and lifestyles despite being twins. The Freedonian family background also motivates Dru’s request that Gru return to crime for one final operation.
