The Relic is an experimental biochip developed by Arasaka as part of its effort to preserve and transfer a person’s personality and memories. The technology is central to the game’s story because the Relic contains an engram of Johnny Silverhand, whose digitized consciousness begins overwriting V’s mind after the chip is damaged and activated.
Arasaka is one of the most powerful corporations in the Cyberpunk setting. Its activities include military security, banking, advanced technology, and research into digital personality preservation. Saburo Arasaka founded the corporation, while his son Yorinobu and daughter Hanako are among its most important figures in the game’s narrative.
Militech is a frequent source of confusion because it is Arasaka’s major corporate rival and also develops weapons and security technology. Kang Tao is another weapons manufacturer, while Biotechnica focuses heavily on biotechnology and food production. None of those companies created the Relic central to V’s story.
