In C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, what kind of creature is Aslan?

The story behind the answer

In C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Aslan is a lion.

Aslan is the central animal figure in The Chronicles of Narnia and is introduced as the great ruler and creator associated with Narnia. In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, his return signals hope during the White Witch’s winter rule.

The character’s name comes from the Turkish word for “lion.” Lewis presents Aslan as a powerful, wise, and compassionate figure, and the stories use Christian imagery around his death and resurrection without making him a human character.

Aslan appears throughout the seven-book Narnia sequence, although his role differs from book to book. He is not the same character as the White Witch, who is the principal antagonist in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
