What was C.S. Lewis’s birthplace in 1898?
Answer
Belfast
Answer
Belfast
C.S. Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898.
Lewis was born on 29 November 1898 at 47 Dundela Villas in the Strandtown area of Belfast, then part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. His full name was Clive Staples Lewis. His older brother, Warren Lewis, was born in 1895, and the two remained close throughout their lives.
The Lewis family later moved to England, where C.S. Lewis attended several schools before becoming a scholar and tutor at Oxford. His childhood in Ireland and England influenced his imagination, especially his love of mythology, medieval literature, and northern landscapes.
Belfast is sometimes confused with Oxford because Oxford became the central setting of Lewis’s academic career. He taught at Magdalen College, Oxford, for many years, but his birthplace was in Northern Ireland. The city now has sites associated with Lewis, including the C.S. Lewis Square, which features sculptures inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia.
