In C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy, what name is given to Mars?

The story behind the answer

In C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy, Mars is called Malacandra.

Malacandra is the name used for Mars in Out of the Silent Planet, the trilogy’s first novel. Elwin Ransom reaches the planet after being abducted from Earth and becomes involved with its inhabitants, including the hrossa, séroni, and pfifltriggï.

Lewis’s fictional Mars is not simply a renamed version of the real planet. It is a living, culturally diverse world whose inhabitants speak different languages and possess moral and intellectual traditions. The novel’s invented terminology reflects Lewis’s interest in philology and comparative language.

Earth is called Thulcandra in the book, meaning the silent planet. Perelandra is the name given to Venus in the second novel, so it is a related but different planetary setting. Glome belongs to Lewis’s separate novel Till We Have Faces.
