In Capcom’s 1989 arcade game Final Fight, the playable mayor is named Mike Haggar.
Final Fight is a side-scrolling beat ’em up developed and published by Capcom. Its story begins in the fictional Metro City, where the criminal gang Mad Gear kidnaps Jessica, the daughter of Mayor Mike Haggar. Rather than surrendering to the gang, Haggar joins martial artist Cody Travers and ninja Guy to rescue her.
Haggar is distinctive because he is both a city mayor and a professional wrestler. His moves include powerful wrestling attacks, grabs and piledrivers, making him the game’s strongest and most forceful playable character. Cody generally uses punches and a knife, while Guy emphasizes speed and rapid attacks.
The name can be confused with the game’s other protagonists, especially Cody and Guy, who also appear in later Capcom fighting games. Final Fight began as a planned sequel to Street Fighter, but its design changed into a beat ’em up. The game later received home versions, sequels and crossover appearances for its characters.
