In “Bridesmaids,” Annie calls Ted to come get her after her car breaks down. Ted, played by Jon Hamm, arrives to give her a ride home.
The moment comes after Annie leaves Lillian’s wedding reception in distress. Her car is later damaged, leaving her stranded on the roadside. Officer Nathan Rhodes also becomes involved, but his role creates an easy source of confusion: he responds to the scene and confronts Annie about their strained relationship, while Ted is the man who actually shows up to pick her up.
Ted is Annie’s casual sexual partner at the start of the film, and their unpleasant ride together reinforces how unhealthy that relationship is. When Ted makes an insulting sexual suggestion in the car, Annie finally tells him to let her out and walks away. Nathan, rather than Ted, becomes the more meaningful romantic possibility in Annie’s story, although their relationship is also complicated by her emotional turmoil and the chaos surrounding Lillian’s wedding.
